Step 1: Choose a name and get hosting
Deciding on a blog name is important! Consider these 3 things:
- Your name should be memorable.
- Your name should be 3 words or less.
- Your name should be unique.
Brainstorm as many ideas as you can. Then check to see if they're available at HostGator.
I used HostGator as my first blog host (you need a company to "host" your blog on the web). They have really reasonable rates and I found customer service very responsive to questions. Once you've decided on a domain name just enter it in the box (shown above) then fill out their registration form. Make a note of your username and password as well as your login URL.
Step 2: Download WordPress & choose a theme
Host Gator makes it simple to download wordpress. Once you have an account you'll have access to your cPanel. Login and you'll see this:
Follow the easy instructions to install WordPress. Once you get the “Installation Complete” you’ll want to make note of the Login URL, Username, and Password. This is separate from HostGator. Your login for your blog will be https://yourblogurl.com/wp-admin (obviously exchange "yourblogurl" for your actual domain name).
Congratulations! You have a blog!
Then you'll need to decide how you want your blog to look. You'll need a "theme" to do that. Search through all the WordPress themes to see what you like.
Go with a premium theme:
Genesis: Most bloggers will recommend StudioPress Themes for WordPress. It is stable (it operates the same no matter which browser or mobile device you use) and it has good backend code. You can choose many theme options that each have the ability to be customized easily. Right now I am loving the Daily Dish Pro Theme.
Elegant Themes: These look nice. I've never used them but they get good reviews.
Step 3: Get organized
Blogging can take up more time than you want it to if you aren't careful! It's FUN but get started on the right foot by setting priorities and making a calendar.
