Has this ever happened to you? It’s girls’ night. You are all dolled up and feeling gorgeous. Then you see photos of yourself later and start frantically texting everyone not to tag you on Facebook.
The truth is, you were gorgeous that night. Let me tell you a little secret all the pros know: If a photo isn’t working, it’s not you! It’s the lens, the light, and the angles!
Photography professionals have a ton of photo tricks in their toolbox to fix those awkward photos. Their tools? Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. And now with affordable subscription options, we can have them too!
Here are the top eleven things my friends secretly ask me to fix in their photos and how to do it.
1. “Can you fix my roots?”
Easy! There are little sliders in Lightroom that let you easily add a glow to faces and other tricks you can learn about here.
3. “Can you push in the pooch?”
Oh, come on…you look amazing! But if you really want it gone…say hello to a cool little Photoshop tool called “Liquify.” Here is how you use it.
4. “Can you make me look skinnier?”
Again, you are gorgeous! But OK, here you go…
5. “Can you whiten my teeth?”
No problem. I’m a coffee drinker, too and have this one as a shortcut. 😉
6. “Can you get rid that little wrinkle?”
What wrinkle where? Oh that tiny thing?! Alright. Here is how you do it.
7. “Can you fix that little blemish on my face?”
Sure. We can just smooth it out a little like this.
8. “Can you get rid of my undereye circles?”
Sure! Here is an easy way to do that using Lightroom’s adjustment brush.
9. “Can you make my skin color look more like it does in real-life?”
Sure. Try this!
Fun fact: Removing red and magenta tones from skin is a re-touch they just about always do with professional photos, especially newborn photos.
Here is how to do it in Lightroom with a group photo.
10. “This photo came out too dark (or bright.) Is it ruined?”
No way! While it is true that a photo with a lot of light captures more detail in the photo, even a pretty dark photo’s exposure can be adjusted with an easy little slider in Lightroom.
Here is how to do it to the whole photo using the histogram.
Here is how to adjust just parts of the photo.
11. “This photo is really yellow (or blue.) Can it be saved?”
Super simple! Here is how you do it.
Remember, you are perfect just the way you are. But learning photo tricks in Photoshop and Lightroom is fun! Do what you need to feel good about your photos instead of obsessing over imperfections.
These are your memories…enjoy them!
