Go To Dress Pattern

Welcome to The Train To Crazy! If you find this tutorial useful I hope you'll subscribe, follow me on twitter, facebook or Google+! Don't forget to check out Make It Wear It, the weekly blog party to showcase all those clothing items and accessories you've been making.

After my obsession with this pattern passed, I set my sights on a another "go to" knit dress for my girls. When Kathy suggested I make a dress with long sleeves, I knew she was right. So, without further ado, I present, the Go To Dress.

Go To Dress button
The perfect dress for cool evenings and long winters. With long sleeves, a shoulder ruffle and an empire waist, how could you go wrong? What little girl wouldn't like a closet full of these? Comfortable and cute!

Naomi 017
Perfect for adventures…

  Naomi 015
The possibilities are endless.

Naomi 014
Pair with some cute leggings or tights if you want, or not.

Pink dress 029
Make them subdued. Or wild.

Cabo dress 031
Or just use what you have lying around. Mix up the fabrics with polka dots and stripes, add an applique or fun pockets, use an old t-shirt or sweater. Be creative.

Mostly just have fun with this Go To Dress!  Whip up a few for all the little girls in your life.

UPDATE: This pattern now comes in sizes 12 mo- 12 years but I can no longer offer it free. You'll find 3 lengths, 7 sleeve options, 4 pocket options and a hood! It is bigger and better and you can buy it at Go To Patterns!

    Hello,
Just wondering if you included seam allowances in the pattern or whether we add them on. I know at 3/8 ” it’s probably not a big deal, but nice to know.
I’m cutting it right now; it’s wonderful pattern. I might do it without sleeves though for the first run

  24. Kym says

Thank you for providing this free pattern. It’s currently my daughter’s favourite dress. She can be hard to fit clothes to as she’s growing up and not out, but this dress fits her perfectly. And congratulations on the newest member of your family!

  25. Hannah says

I loved the idea to use an old t-shirt. I just got done making this dress but instead of a t-shirt I used an old wool sweater. I also cut sleeves off of a shirt that had a stain on the front to use. Turned out super cute! Thanks for the Idea!

  26. Alison says

is there any chance of getting this pattern in bigger sizes? It’s adorable, but my girls are older!

  27. Tricia says

  31. Fran McGee says

I am just starting to sew garments again after a 10 year or so hiatus. I never really sewed much for myself, mostly for my son when he was young…hmmm I guess that’s a 15 year hiatus….he’s almost 22. I have made a few clothing items for myself, and some quilting. For the past 6 or 7 years my trusty Viking 150E has been overly neglected.
So far I have made a top for my grand-niece with added ruffles and ribbons from a simplicity pattern I got at a thrift shop, out of darling curtain fabric.
I also made a pair of basketball pajama pants from a tutorial, which was great, except I made a small miscalculation…so they are going to my young nephew. I made the pattern from a pair of my daughter’s pajama pants that were made of stretch fabric, and forgot the basketball fabric was flannel. He is very happy about them, because I still have enough fabric to make a pair that will fit my 13 year daughter, and they can “match” when she goes over to my sister’s to babysit him.
Soooo I am really excited to make this dress for my grand-niece and my grand-daughter. (Step grand-daughter technically, but she doesn’t hold it against me)
I have friended you on flickr and joined your group, so I will post the completed dresses and such as I make them. It will be nice to have other people to show them to.

  32. Sonya says

Love this dress – my girls used to wear lots of knit dresses when they were younger – they wash up so great. Any chance you have you’ve had time to size this pattern up? Still love this style even for my size 7/8 and 10/12 girls!

  33. Becs says

Oh! Temporarily unavailable… Any idea when it will be back up please – would love to try this for my little miss! I love your fabric choices too! Thanks.
