How to plant an avocado seed in soil:
- Save a healthy avocado seed.
- Soak it in hot water 106° to 130°F for 30 minutes.
- Cut a thin slice – about ½ inch from the pointed end.
- Dip the cut end in a fungicide.
- Plant the seed in a 6 inch pot of sandy soil with the cut end just above the soil surface.
- Place the pot in warm, indirect sunlight.
- Keep the soil moist but not overly wet. Yellowing leaves are a sign of over-watering; let the plant dry out for a few days.If leaves turn brown and fry at the tips, too much salt has accumulated in the soil. Let water run freely into the pot and drain for several minutes.
- Plant will begin to grow in 3-4 weeks. When the stem is 12 inches high, cut it back to 6 inches to encourage the growth of new shoots.
- When the seedling is about 12-16 inches it should be repotted or moved to the final location.
How to grow an avocado seed in water:
- Wash the seed. Use three toothpicks, suspend it large end down over a glass of water to cover about an inch of the seed.
- Put it in a warm place out of direct sunlight. Add more water to keep level consistent. You should see roots and stem sprout in about two to six weeks.
- When the stem is six inches long, cut it back to three inches.
- When the roots are thick and the stem has leafed out again, plant it in a rich humus soil in a 10-½″ diameter pot, leaving the seed half exposed.
- Yellowing leaves are a sign of over-watering; let the plant dry out for a few days.
- The more sunlight, the better.
- If leaves turn brown and fry at the tips, too much salt has accumulated in the soil. Let water run freely into the pot and drain for several minutes.
- When the stem is 12 inches high, cut it back to 6 inches to encourage the growth of new shoots.
- When the seedling is about 12-16 inches it should be repotted or moved to the final location.

Thank you! I love avocados, and always wondered if I would be able to grow a tree myself. I’ll attempt to grow it in water first, and try oil if I fail 🙂 It would be so great to have a tree that I grew myself, not to mention it would be a great indoor plant until it’s big enough to transplant outside.
