Banana Boat S’mores Recipe

Take your s’mores game up a notch! These hands free banana boat s’mores are perfect for campfires, backyard barbeques or even making inside. This delicious s’mores dessert is made inside a banana peel and broiled in the oven or over the grill.

Grab your spoon to eat these! These are better than an ice cream sundae! You can scoop out or leave as much of the banana as you want, too. Banana lovers will want to leave more. Yum.

• Bananas
• Jumbo marshmallows: Substitute mini marshmallows if you want.
• Graham crackers
• Chocolate chips: Use semi-sweet chocolate chips, milk chocolate chips, or dark chocolate chips. You can substitute Hershey’s chocolate squares, white chocolate chips or even butterscotch chips.

These work really well with a cast iron skillet in the oven, which is how we’ll show you how to make these. But take that pan on outside to your fire pit on those great summer days. I’ve seen a lot of people do this wrapping the bananas in foil. But what results is a gooey, marshmallow cream mess. I much prefer my marshmallows toasted rather than completely melted! So skip the aluminum foil!

Prep: Cut the top off the banana peel. Scoop most of the banana out of the peel.

Fill: Place the banana boats in a cast iron skillet. Fill the peel with marshmallows, graham cracker and chocolate. For fun, you can also add a little peanut butter, strawberries, blueberries, cherry, nutella or a little coconut or pecans.

Cook: Place the skillet over the campfire on a grilling grate, BBQ grill or broil in the oven for a short time until the marshmallows are browned. If you’re broiling, keep an eye on the banana boats. They can go from uncooked to burned very quickly. The cooking time is only about a minute.

Serve: Eat with a spoon or drizzle with caramel sauce or chocolate sauce. You can sprinkle with graham cracker crumbs, peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts or your other favorite toppings. Serve with a side of vanilla ice cream.

I love the traditional s’mores over a fire with a stick. But they really are a lot of work when you’ve got a lot of kids. Plus, keeping everyone safe when there are 4 year olds holding hot sticks in a fire can sometimes be a challenge. Totally worth it, but a challenge.
